And now this project can be added to the list that I have actually finished. This 3rd cd/compilation of original tunes
called 'Too Little Time', came about pretty easily in a period of about 8 months. Most of the tunes were ones I had
already written, if not recorded... 4 of these tunes being written on the spot as I compiled this cd. Events in my life
and the world help to inspire the songs that I write, as you can read above.
I have been asked a few times about my 'looping'. Most of my guitarwork is done without looping. I play the part
from start to finish. But that's not to say I haven't used looping, because I have on a few occasions. I do use looping
to create a lot of the 'side effects' that accompany my playing. Samples of things around me, squeeks, clunks, pipe
slapping ... whatever the moment calls for as I record. As I record, the ideas and sounds and effects present
themselves to me and I work with those ... sort of avante guard ... Sure the basic song is usually worked out on the
guitar already ... but the 'add ons' happen a lot of the times, on the spot.
On this cd, I have also collaborated with 2 other musicians online....Dirk Barkemeijer de Wit... aka DidgWizard on
one of my original compositions ... 'The RedKnot Wind' ... Myspace has allowed us to do that... very cool! Also,
percussionist, Larry Mahlis playing clay pot on the composition 'Two The Sea'. I hope to work further on other
projects with my friends and brothers Dirk & Larry. I also am looking to collaborate with other musicians online as
they present themselves or the opportunities arise. Interested??
On a larger world scale, we as humans need to come to a more harmonious lifestyle on this planet. More efficiency in
our living and use of the worlds' resources. We are the only species that can consciously see and somewhat
understand the workings of the planet and therefore should be the 'better' species ... and take care of our home in
the universe...not destroy as we now do. Peace and lower your own personal impact... become as one with the breath
of Mother Earth.... waste not .... want not.... you are but one... but many ones can bring change. R.E.A.
Too Little Time - songs text REA / May - 2008
|
Two The Sea : - 2007-2008 – Parts of this song had been plaguing me for about a month or so before it finally all
came together as a tune. They were written in 2007 but it all came together and was recorded in Jan./2008… the
name? Something about two girls…and we’ll leave it at that… DADGAD tuning. addendum : 1/7/2009 : My good
friend and old music theory buddy from college, Larry Mahlis, has added in a nice clay pot percussion part to the
mix. Larry is one of the best percussionists that I have had the pleasure of knowing. We went to school at Weber
State Univ back in the 80s and have stayed in contact since. He now lives and plays in the Seattle area and works
with the likes of David Lanz and Anoushka Shankar (Ravi Shankars’ daughter).
In The Dark : - 1994 – I was going to bed one night and after turning off the lights to go upstairs, I tripped over
my guitar leaning on the coffee table (where I’d left it leanin after jamming earlier). I barely avoided stomping on
the guitar by trying to save it…but I did save it and when I went to put it away…it called to me. I sat down right
thenandthere and this was the tune that was born that night sitting there playing in the dark. EBEGBE tuning
addendum 5/23/2008 : this song was originally released on my first cd 'Splorin' Acoustically. Since adding the
new recording software/hardware, I have revisited this song also and redid it. The squeeking noise you hear in the
song, is actually samples I took of actual squeeks in the wood floor in my own home. Yeah I know...weird!
Wall Streak : - 1996/2008 – This is listed as both yrs. because I actually wrote the guitar part as the tune ‘Wall
Street’, which is on my first cd. ‘Splorin’ Acoustically’. But this is a retake on the exact same guitar parts but with
the tempo totally changed. It changed the whole feel for the progression, so I decided to record it as a separate
tune…added a few effects and there you have it. There are three guitar parts sort of. That really means…I took
the main guitar part and tripled it…then ran the two duplicate tracks thru different effects. One thru a synth and
the other has been transposed up 3…count them… three octaves. Some pretty strange outcome though. My good
friend, Larry Mahlis has been so kind as to add the Tabla percussion...sweet!! DADGAD tuning.
They : - May/2008 – This is a brand new tune written on the spot, May 9th. I've had this little riff floating around
in my pool of riffs for years. Then I sit down the night before I recorded this, and out comes this total tune based
around this old riff. I could never get it to fit anywhere, but had always liked it...then out of the blue...this. One
guitar part recorded in only a couple of takes, programmed drums and me doing the weird voice thing. The whole
overall sound gave me a strange feeling of dread and so called the tune 'They'. I have to admit that this song was
also inspired by all of the nasty events happening in the world today. Cyclone, Tsunami, Earthquakes, hunger, human
rights struggles and species extinctions and habitat destruction....but ....You can get whatever you want to get out of
the name or the tune …EBEGBE tuning. It's got a good groove to it though… addendum 5/18/08 : - sat down and
added an eerie little synth part. Adds a nice creepy atmosphere to the mix..
The RedKnot Wind : - Feb/2008 – Started out as just fiddling around with an echo effect…then watched a PBS
show on these shorebirds called the Red Knot. Holy Cow!! These little guys fly a roundtrip of 20,000 miles a yr in
their migration. A 16 yr old bird will have flown the equivalent of going to the moon!! And we, the human population,
have harvested the birds’ main foodsource, the horseshoe crab, for fishbait, and that has in turn decimated the Red
Knot population. A small bird…not a lot … if alone.. a small loss, but this is a harbinger, and one of thousands on the
planet today where man has disrupted the order of things. The loss of this species along with thousands of others is
what inspired this song. The ill wind of change… Again three guitar parts, all exactly the same, except for the
effects applied to each part. One is just plain picking/strumming, the 2nd has an echo applied, and the 3rd is
transposed 3 octaves up. This song may call for a didjeridoo in the future, but this is the basics. DADGAD tuning
addendum 4-7-08 : DidgWizard ... aka ... Dirk Barkemeijer de Wit, has collaborated with me over the internet
and this is what we have come up with. Check out his myspace profile @http://www.myspace.com/didgwizard and his
full website @didgwizard.com ... his stuff is pretty awesome and very spiritual. Highly recommended listening for
those of you into the didgeridu. This has been included in his new release, Didgeridoo Transcendence... Look for it as
well as his other previous releases.
Skeletal Remains & Bicycle Frames : - 1992 – A mtn bike ride to the old Snow Basin ski resort, before all the
development, with Jim Heiner. We got turned around a little, or ‘lost’ as Jim saw it and he said about being lost: “All
they’ll find in the spring is ‘skeletal remains and bicycle frames’!” I went home with that phrase in mind and out
came this song. One guitar part only…EBEGBE tuning. addendum: - 2008 – re-recorded and mixed.
The Glide : - 2007 – The outcome of a droopy eyed 3 in the morning recording session…this emerged. My attempt
to emulate the words of my great mentor, Leo ‘my Hero’ Kottke …”take a simple melody and drive it into the
ground”. I think I did a good job at just that too!! Two guitar parts on this…one just goes on and on (batteries not
included), and the other is the lead picking/strumming & then drum programming. The total overall sound reminded
me of something smooth and sliding, gliding…bingo!! ‘The Glide’…what is must sound like to bomb the downhill totally
in tune or ride a wave and hit the pipe, or even a killer pow shot on untracked…close your eyes and hear the picture!
Written, recorded and mastered on the spot…I sometimes don’t know where they come from…believe me. DADGAD
tuning & space out!!
Jammin’ D part zwei : - 1994 – This is part two of the first song that I used extensive harmonics on. Called
originally ‘Jam in D’, because it is just that…a jam in the D-tuning and over time just became ‘Jammin’ D. This starts
out in waltz time (3/4 or 6/8) and switches to standard 4/4 then back to waltz. A fun one to play and more
experimenting…DADGAD guitar tuning. addendum: - 2007 - This one just went thru extensive morphisization and
became the tune you hear. The strange voicelike thingy is really my voice run thru a resonator and another part has
the tuning shifted by 20 steps and got this weird hornlike sound ... worked out pretty nice actually...but out there.
Jammin’ D part ichi : - 1993 ½ - Part one has finally been recorded. Read about the name below in part zwei, I
recorded it first…though I wrote this part first. A strange little jam using a strange little picking pattern and only
a ‘forest floor’ reverb … Finally … together again … ichi and zwei ??? DADGAD tuning.
Ground Beef : - 1995 - One guitar part with some strange picking pattern and strumming & drum programming. Who
knows why I called it ‘Ground Beef’...maybe because it reminds me of something all ground to bits … never-ending …
but still tasty…EGDGAE tuning
AandA : - 2003 – This was actually written for my friends, Arlo and Amanda… ‘AandA’. I played for their wedding on
top of Powder Mtn ski resort and this is the song I played as Amanda walked down the isle. Just a nice slow finger
picking tune. I am putting this on my 3rd cd – ‘Too Little Time’, just for them. One guitar part, whistling and drums.
…EGDGAE tuning.
Too Walk In Wonder (remix) : - 1997 – An experiment into a 6-note backward roll. I have to admit, parts of this
tune were inspired by listening to and watching Michael Hedges. Named by my good friend and fellow musician Dan
Weldon, who said it reminded him of just being in wonderment of something. DADGAD tuning. addendum: - 2008 – I
was never really satisfied with the outcome of this song on my 1st cd. So, I have revisited this and re-recorded and
added a little percussion to give it a little drive. Still, one of the hardest pieces to play without a doubt.
